How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Start from public records

Every open insurance office in Hawaii with Google reviews.

  2. 2

    Remove duplicates

Merged offices and dropped the ones that have closed.

  3. 3

    Read their websites

Noted the products and languages each agent names.

  4. 4

    Rank by rating

Google rating weighted by review count, life sellers first.

Every listing starts from public business records and Google Maps for Hawaii. We keep insurance offices that are open and have at least one review. We merge duplicates and drop offices that have closed.

Then we read each agent's own website and note what it says they offer: life insurance, term or whole life, annuities, final expense, and the languages spoken. Agents whose sites say they sell life insurance come first in each city. The rest follow. We do not check licenses or rates, so confirm both with the agent.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add photos. A person checks every claim. Published by Leo Stone.

How to choose a life insurance agent in Hawaii

Most people buy life insurance once or twice in their lives, so few of us know what to ask. This guide covers the basics for choosing a life insurance agent in Hawaii. It is general information, not advice about your own coverage.

Start with the license. Anyone who sells, solicits or negotiates insurance in Hawaii needs a producer license from the Insurance Division of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. You can look up an agent by name with the DCCA Insurance License Search, or with the NAIC agent search, which also shows the lines of insurance the person may sell. It takes a minute and it is worth doing before you share your health or money details.

Know what kind of agent you are calling. A captive agent works with one company. Many of the offices in this directory are State Farm or Allstate agencies, and they mostly offer that company's policies. An independent agent or broker can quote several companies. Neither is better by default. A captive agent may know one company's products very well. An independent agent can compare. Ask which one you are talking to.

Match the agent to the product. Term life covers a set number of years. Whole life and universal life are permanent coverage with a cash value part. Final expense policies are small whole life policies for end of life costs. Annuities are retirement income contracts. Each listing shows which of these the agent's own website names. Not enough info means the site did not say, not that the agent does not offer it.

Ask these questions on the first call. Which companies can you quote? How are you paid on this policy? What happens if I miss a payment? Can the premium go up later? Is there a medical exam, or only health questions? If I want to cancel, what do I get back? A good agent will answer in plain words and put the important parts in writing.

Read the reviews with care. A 5.0 rating from three reviews says less than a 4.8 from two hundred. Look at what reviewers say about how the agent handled a claim or a policy change, not only how friendly the office was.

Language and location matter here. Hawaii families often want an agent who speaks Japanese, Ilocano, Tagalog or another language at home, and some agents list that on their sites. You can find them on the languages page. On the neighbor islands there are fewer offices, so check the nearby towns on each city page too.

Take your time. Nobody should push you to sign the same day. Read the policy, check the beneficiary names, and keep a copy where your family can find it. If something goes wrong, the DCCA Insurance Division takes complaints.

Talk to a licensed Hawaii agent

Not sure where to start? Ask a licensed agent. It costs nothing to ask.

You can also look at Equity Insurance, Inc, an independent Honolulu agency offering term, whole and indexed universal life.

Frequently asked questions

How are life insurance agents listed here?

Every listing starts from public business records and Google Maps for Hawaii. We keep businesses that are open and have reviews, merge duplicates, and drop closed offices. Agents whose own websites say they sell life insurance are shown first.

Do you charge agents to be listed?

No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Agents can pay for a featured spot or a premium listing. Those are marked as featured, premium or best-of wherever they appear.

Does this site sell insurance or give advice?

No. Hawaii Agent Finder is a directory. We do not sell policies, quote rates or tell you what coverage to buy. Talk to a licensed agent about your own situation.

How do I check that an agent is licensed in Hawaii?

Anyone who sells insurance in Hawaii needs a producer license from the state Insurance Division. You can look up a name with the DCCA Insurance License Search or the NAIC agent search before you meet.

What do the service details on each listing mean?

They show what the agent's own website says they offer, such as term life, annuities or final expense. Not enough info means the site did not say. Ask the agent to be sure.
